Staff Data Scientist (Machine Learning Engineer)
San Francisco, California
The Invest Data Science team is looking to add data scientists / ML engineers (combined roles), who will help shape Invest product development decisions and strategy through data-driven insights. This person will build and lead a team that will be working closely with the Business Units, product, and finance partners to transform SoFi Invest into the leading retail investment platform for anyone who wants to Get Their Money Right. Responsibilities include the end to end flows of data preparation, model building, and deploying into production. Success in this role hinges on your technical aptitude, quantitative abilities, and business acumen: you know how to plow through data with SQL/Python/R/Tableau, surface insights using math/statistics/ML techniques, integrate model predictions into production code, and measure the business impact using efficiency/conversion/profit metrics. You will need great understanding of the Invest business (not a prerequisite), and You will also grow your team and their skillset.
What you’ll do:
Work with amazing product and business managers to identify strategic opportunities, measure KPIs to craft compelling stories, make data-driven recommendations, and drive informed actions
Responsible for building out a large scale production machine learning pipeline consisting of offline workflows and online services
Mentor the professional development of each direct report through personal and performance management
Provide oversight: Work with engineers and researchers to understand how everything fits together and how best to deliver meaningful impact. Understands when ML is applicable and when it is not, and what are the risks
Own end-to-end Invest product analytics workflow including formulating success metrics, socializing them across the organization, and creating dashboards/reports
Craft, analyze, and present customer behavior metrics, such as funnel conversion, user churn, and cross-sell metrics. Work with product managers to design tests to improve these metrics
You stay focused on what’s best for the company – sometimes that requires being flexible, other times it requires being steadfast
What you’ll need:
2+ years of Management experience
Intellectual curiosity and aptitude to pick up new technical skills
High EQ with ability to influence outcomes and communicate technical content to general audiences
Have a background in machine learning, ideally deep learning techniques, prediction/binary classification. Experience with recommender systems is a plus
Comfortable with A/B experimentation best practices and defining key metrics
Hold your own technically with engineers on the team and give constructive feedback on projects and ideas
Support giving engineers the tools, confidence, and motivation they need to make decisions independently
Strong recruiter of engineering talent and comfortable closing applicants for your team and the business
